NFL Betting Odds and Lines

Bookmakers went to press with the Cowboys as the road favorites but as low as -2 or -2.5 back in spring. Immediate action on the Cowboys, America’s favorite team, pushed the point spread to a field-goal advantage for the Cowboys, where it held firm until this week. Today, several of the best sportsbooks have the Cowboys at -2.5 and others have the Cowboys at -3 -- with adjustments to the vig being made according to the point spread.

Heritage is serving up the Cowboys at -3 (+105) and the Rams at +3 (-115), while BetOnline has the Rams at +3 (-120) and the Cowboys at -3 (+100). By contrast, BookMaker serves up the Cowboys at -2.5 (-117) and the Rams at +2.5 (-103). Clearly, a selection of point spreads with outside vigs are available and depending on which way bettors are looking to bet this game, shopping around for the best line is highly recommended.

Dallas Cowboys Begin New Era with Mike McCarthy

If the high expectations on Dallas this season put the Cowboys under any pressure week 1, Mike McCarthy and Dak Prescott are both feeling the brunt of it. Mike McCarthy replaces long-time head coach Jason Garrett and nothing short of a winning opener will be satisfactory enough. No ifs or buts about it, the premium on winning week 1 is huge; if only to prove that letting Garrett go was the right decision and that he (McCarthy) was the right man for the job.

Dak Prescott, meanwhile, failed to sign the dotted line in the offseason – at least in terms of a massive deal in the region of the deals given to Patrick Mahomes and, more recently, Deshaun Watson. Somehow, allegedly, the window to sign Prescott came and went with nothing being agreed to in time, leaving the quarterback essentially singing for his super this season. Put it this way, anything less than a playoff run and Prescot may not even be the quarterback in Dallas next season.

Mike McCarthy has overhauled the Cowboys staff but he did keep offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who was behind Prescott’s statistically impressive 2019 season. In so doing, there is an element of familiarity and continuity for the Cowboys on offense, which can only mean good news for Prescott who needs to have a good year. Prescott threw for 4,902 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 2020.

It has to be said though Prescott needs to have more than a statistically impressive season. Littering the stats sheet doesn’t fill Jerry Jones’ trophy cabinet with a Lombardy, does it? Given all the offensive pieces that the Cowboys have in place, should the Cowboys fail to impress for a second-straight season one wonders whether Prescott’s number will be up.

Going into 2020, Prescott has enviable weapons at his disposal, including WR CeeDee Lamb, a rookie prospect that had many teams practically salivating for a chance to select in the 2020 NFL draft before Jerry Jones cruised in and got there first.

The Cowboys are expected to have a high-octane offense, one of the top offenses in the league with a dynamic trio in the receiving corps: Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and CeeDee Lamb. Then there is running back Ezekiel Elliot – who has a contract, mind you – who is a workhorse and a ground threat that can tear up opposing defenses.

What Prescott has in front of him also means that there will be no room for excuses or failure this time. Under no circumstances can an 8-8 SU mark and a seat on the couch for the playoffs be accepted. Garrett fell on the proverbial sword in 2019…

Dallas has a new special teams coach in John Fassel, who was with the Los Angeles Rams last season before being coaxed over to Dallas; that connection with the Rams, who are ironically week 1 opponents, may also set up the Cowboys favorably. This thing known as insider information.

The Cowboys drafted CB Trevon Diggs, who is Stefon Diggs’ younger brother and is expected to make an immediate impact. Diggs joins the defense that includes newly signed Everson Griffin (Minnesota Vikings) and veteran Aldon Smith, who last played in 2017 with the Raiders.

Are the Rams Underrated?

To watch HBO’s Hard Knocks is to immediately claim the Los Angeles Rams are being massively underrated in 2020 and especially in week 1 for their home opener against the Dallas Cowboys. A home opener that will mark the debut of their brand-spanking new stadium no less.

HBO’s docu-drama has a way at tugging at the heartstrings, building excitement for a team ahead of the regular season and in turn raising expectations ridiculously. Last season, the same happened with the Raiders only for them to fail to live up to the buzz and hype.

The Rams enter 2020 without Todd Gurley, the running back that took the NFL by storm in 2017 and won the Offensive Player of the Year award; the player that was instrumental to their sensational run to Super Bowl LIII. Unfortunately, Gurley wasn’t in top form in 2019 and the Rams parted with him in the offseason.

Jared Goff had his fair share of struggles in 2019, often excruciatingly so that it was unbearable to watch. There will be pressure on Goff to improve in 2020 and towards that end, the return of Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, and Tyler Higbee will be key.

The Rams’ defense though is probably where the real strength of this team lies, the pass-rush that is. Shutdown cornerback Jalen Ramsey and defensive tackle Aaron Donald are two players to spot this season that can terrorize offenses and give quarterbacks headaches. On the opposite of Ramsey is Troy Hill, rounding out a solid cornerback duo. The run defense for the Rams could be the weaker link after losing leading tackler Corey Littleton and several linebackers in the offseason.

The Rams made some staffing changes at the end of last season that suggests this will be a slightly different Rams team, even a much improved side. McVay hired three new coaches with excellent NFL pedigree: Kevin O’Connell (Off Coordinator), Brandon Staley (Def Coordinator), and John Bonamego (Special Teams Coordinator). Early indications point to all three being a good fit with the Rams and that they’ll bring value to a side that only just missed making the cut for the playoffs.

NFL Betting Verdict

Everyone and their grandmother is betting on the Dallas Cowboys to win the season-opener against the Los Angeles Rams in Sunday Night Football. The reason for it: a loaded offense that is expected to see the Cowboys play from ahead over the course of the season, which is all fine and dandy. It’s really nothing new with the Cowboys. After all, it’s America’s beloved team that the public loves to love.

However, betting on the Cowboys on the road as the favorites on the NFL odds board presupposes that the team will gel under new head coach Mike McCarthy right out of the gates. That the offense will live up to the billing. To be fair, that doesn’t always happen, even with good teams and excellent head coaches – as this pairing clearly represents. Growing pains are a part of life…unavoidable even with the best of intentions.

Moreover, it does seem to put a lot of the onus on the offense to win this game and maybe not enough on the defense. Prescott had trouble closing out games in 2019 and the Cowboys defense was more porous than Swiss cheese at times. Hardly anyone is talking up the Dallas defense ahead of 2020.

Cowboys and rams game

The Rams haven’t gone quite through a staff overhaul as the Cowboys have. They have the edge on defense with the best defensive player in the game Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey, and they have home advantage for their season opener. Furthermore, nobody expects the Rams to win or, even, cover. Predictions point almost exclusively to a blowout by Dallas.

Well, the pressure is entirely on the Cowboys then, isn’t it? And that intangible tips the balance in favor of the hosts rather than the visitors for yours truly. As such, the NFL pick here is the Rams.
